We can’t think of anything more autumn than a warm Spiced Apple Fritter tossed in a spiced sugar. Crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside with a plethora of apples and autumnal spices. Every bite is like true autumn comfort.
These quick fritters are made without yeast which means there is no need to wait hours while the dough proofs. Just mix the batter, fold in apples, and deep fry until golden. Then we toss them in a spiced sugar to make the coziest seasonal treat that everyone loves.

Top tips for making spiced apple fritters:
Dice apples evenly. To be sure that all the apples are cooked evenly, cut them into a 1/4″ dice.
Don’t overmix the batter. Overmixing the batter can result in a chewy unpleasant texture. Mix until the ingredients are just combined and no dry flour remains.
Flavour to taste. Every has different tastes and preferences – we recommend frying off a very small dollop of the batter for tasting before frying the whole batch to ensure you have the perfect spice ratio for you.
Deep fry until golden on both sides. For the best fry fritters should be fried at 325F until they are a deep golden colour. The spices in these make the colour very rich. Test the temperature by frying a fritter and cutting in half to ensure the batter is cooked all the way through. If it’s undercooked you didn’t cook it long enough or your oil is too hot.
Let cool on a wire rack. To keep a crispy outer crust let the fritters cool on a wire rack so no condensation build up.
Toss in sugar while still warm. To ensure the sugar adheres to the fritters toss them in the spiced sugar when still slightly warm.

Ingredients
Apple Fritters
180 g (1½ cups) all purpose flour
10 g (2 tsp) baking powder
3 g (1 tsp) ground cinnamon
3 g (1 tsp) ginger powder
3 g (1 tsp) ground nutmeg
1 g (¼ tsp) ground cloves
2 g (½ tsp) cardamom
pinch salt
120 mL (½ cup) applesauce
30 mL (2 tbsp) butter, melted
180 mL (¾ cup) soy milk
5 mL (1 tsp) apple cider vinegar
15 mL (1 tbsp) maple syrup
3 Granny Smith apples, diced
vegetable oil, for frying
Ginger Cinnamon Sugar
100 g (½ cup) granulated sugar
8 g (1 tbsp) cinnamon
5 g (2 tsp) ginger
Instructions
In a large bowl combine all purpose flour, baking powder, ground cinnamon, ginger powder, ground nutmeg, ground cloves, ground cardamom, and salt. Mix until combined.
To the flour mixture add applesauce, melted vegan butter, non-dairy milk, and maple syrup. Mix until combined. Add diced apples and mix until evenly distributed throughout the batter.
Heat 2 inches of oil over medium heat to 325°F. Using a cookie scoop, drop batter into the hot oil and cook for 4-5 minutes until golden on all sides. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.
Combine the granulated sugar, cinnamon, and ginger in a shallow bowl. Toss slightly cooled fritters into the ginger cinnamon sugar until evenly coated.
Ingredient Notes:
Apples – We use Granny Smith apples for this recipe. They’re not too sweet and still have some crunch even after frying. You can use a different variety of apple, but if you’re unsure if they’ll hold up to frying we recommend sticking to Granny Smith.
Spices – These fritters pack a punch thanks to the cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, ginger, and cardamom that we pack into them.
Soy Milk – Any non-dairy milk will work so just use whichever you have on hand.
Baking Soda – Because these don’t have yeast in them like traditional donuts the baking soda is what gives it the fluffy interior. DO NOT SKIP THIS INGREDIENT.
