Top tips for making Vegan Hot Chocolate:
Low and slow is key. When making hot chocolate on the stove, it’s important to keep the temperature low – no higher than medium. Any higher and you run the risk of burning the milk and no one likes burnt milk.
Use a good dark chocolate. When we say good we don’t necessarily mean expensive. Instead we mean, use a dark chocolate that you like the taste of! Because the chocolate is where most of the flavour is coming from its important to like the taste of the chocolate you use. We use our favourite President’s Choice Dark Chocolate for any recipe that calls for chocolate. It’s inexpensive and delicious!
Don’t forget the salt. Salt and chocolate are the perfect pair. Salt enhances flavour, that’s why it is (or should be) in all recipes you make. When you salt chocolate whether it’s in this recipe or in cookies, you get the most delicious and full bodied chocolate flavour possible.

About the ingredients and tools:
Coconut Milk – To get the best coconut flavour we recommend using canned coconut milk. We like using the Aroy-D Coconut Milk, but whatever your favourite one is should work. Though we do recommend using one with a higher fat content for a creamier hot chocolate.
Dark Chocolate – Dark chocolate is key for a full bodied hot chocolate experience. Use your favourite dark chocolate, double check that it’s vegan, for a delicious and creamy hot chocolate that you love. We used President’s Choice Dark Chocolate for this recipe when developing and all of our chocolate recipes.
Cocoa Powder – Like the dark chocolate, this is where a lot of the flavour comes from. It’s important to use a cocoa powder that you like the taste of. Again this doesn’t have to mean that it’s expensive – we used the No Name Cocoa Powder for ours.
Salt – Salt enhances flavour which is why you find it in most recipes, even sweet ones! We use a kosher salt for most of our recipes including this one.
The best part about this recipe? Even though it’s homemade on the stovetop, it is actually surprisingly easy. All you need is two kitchen tools that everyone has in their kitchen!
Saucepan – Use a small saucepan to make this creamy hot chocolate recipe. We use our enamel saucepan for this recipe but any one that you have should work.
Whisk – Use a metal or silicone whisk for this recipe.
